Our Philosophy

Freedom to learn

Our daily prayer says it all. Every morning we affirm that we shall set our minds free. Free to learn, free to be and let be, freedom from fear and therefore, freedom to express articulately what the mind conceives. That every child receives knowledge impartially. That every child feels keenly that life and the world, belong to every living being and that conservation and preservation is as much a duty as a privilege. That perseverance is an associate of creativity. That right actions are determined by values so ingrained that actions are compassionate and comprehensive. That every endeavour would reflect deep thought and understanding, expressed with love and beauty. This is the world we have set to create for our children; the world we expect they will create in their turn.

  • To pioneer our teaching program, which is unique to Indian education.
  • To provide quality and creative education from pre-primary to higher secondary education.
  • To be a place that helps a child become the best he/she can be.

Lumens originated with purpose of providing children with a creative education that gave them “the freedom to learn”. Our educationist M R Raghavan (well-known expert in Child Education), developed a teaching program called ‘Quad Seek’, which develops - the physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual upbringing of students. India’s present educational methods tap and develop a very small portion of the human capacity, thus we aim to discover and draw out the genius within each student.

  • We have three pre-primary schools – in Vapi (Gunjan area), Chala and Daman
  • The main-school building is proposed at the Village Namdha (2km from Vapi)
  • The main-school will be equipped with state of the art facilities.
  • Each class will have only 25 kids, to ensure individual attention

Our Story

It all began with Nirupama - a four year old girl, who could read and write 4 languages and who knew simple arithmetic, i.e. 2-digit addition/subtraction. She also knew the entire world map and she had stunned the Governor of Mumbai by reading The Times of India. However - Nirupama isn’t any extraordinary super child. She is just a normal girl. In fact, the only thing extraordinary about her life was the teaching method that her parents schooled her in. Niru’s mother Aruna Raghvan, has been a sub-editor at Illustrated Weekly of the Times of India. An MPhil in English she has taught in reputed schools like Kodai International, Gandhi Vidyashram and St.Andrews. Niru’s father M.R. Raghvan – an ex-Chartered Accountant, has since a very early age dedicated his life to the cause of teaching.

Raghavan and Aruna – being of the belief that every child has the capacity to be a genius in his/her own way, realized that many parents at home and teachers at school, knowingly or unknowingly – prevent children from discovering or even pursuing this hidden genius, by simply telling them to “do what is told” instead. Thus, to avoid such restrictive forms of education, they decided not to send Niru to any school. Instead adapting unique teaching techniques developed inthe USA, they created their own M R Raghavan and Aruna Raghavan share a light moment

teaching method called ‘Quad Seek’ to school her themselves. Inspired by the amazing results it showed with Niru’s learning, they decided to take their teaching method to children in wider circles.

Their Journey truly began however, when Mr. Raghavan (at the age of 32) left his CA practice, along with his 6 year old daughter and wife, moved to a very remote village called Arasavangkadu - 300km from Chennai. This was a place where let alone a school, even a telephone or any electricity was hard to find, at that time, and it was here that the Raghavans started a free school for labourer’s children. They called the school “Shikshayatan” – a place that’s well known across South-India today. Soon after which - being regulars at the Shri Aurobindo Ashram – a Karmayogi asked them to help start a school in Pondicherry. This led to them staying there for three years and starting a school called Primrose, one of Pondicherry’s top schools today.

Ever since then, the Raghavans have travelled across the world and helped start 18 schools in India and Malaysia. Even today still, Arasavanangkadu remains the couple’s permanent home, where they teach underprivileged kids, with lots of love and passion.
It was this story of Raghavans that kindled our passion for education and gave birth to Lumens. This system aims at not only to produce students with academic degrees but at making them great human beings with a deep understanding of the knowledge that they have received. In 2011, Mr. Raghavan agreed to help start a school with Lumens at Vapi. We have three pre-schools, two in Vapi and one in Daman. Our main-school, which is runners through multiple centres across Mumbai. He dreams of every Lumens child being physically fit and beautiful.
